Special Requirements for Cooling Tower Selection under High-
Cooling towers for high-temperature applications cannot be selected using standard specifications for ambient-temperature service. Selection needs separate evaluation of fill media, tower shell, motor and thermal load calculation.
High-temperature resistant fill media Standard PVC fill media tends to soften, deform, bond or collapse under elevated water temperatures, resulting in loss of heat transfer capacity. For high-temperature conditions, fill media with a higher temperature rating shall be adopted. Verify that the maximum allowable inlet water temperature of the fill media covers the actual operating condition.
Enhanced corrosion protection for the tower shell High-temperature moisture accelerates corrosion of the tower structure. FRP shells shall be manufactured with corrosion-resistant resin and lining structures, and metal components shall be properly treated against corrosion to prevent delamination and rusting within a short service period.
High-temperature rated motors and gearboxes Heat dissipation for motors deteriorates in hot surroundings, and standard motors are prone to overheating and shutdown. High-temperature resistant motors and gear reducers are required. Extra power margin shall be considered when necessary to guarantee stable long-term operation under high heat.
Priority calculation of thermal load High-temperature conditions usually feature larger temperature differentials and heavier thermal loads compared with normal-temperature applications. Sizing shall not be based merely on water flow rate. The heat exchange area shall be calculated according to the actual thermal load with a reasonable safety margin.
In summary, the key points for high-temperature selection are confirming the temperature rating of fill media, reinforcing shell corrosion resistance, specifying high-temperature rated motors, and calculating based on real thermal load. Providing these requirements upfront enables manufacturers to recommend a properly matched model.
